KANANGA
Kananga village
Kananga village is located in the subdivision of Bokito, Mbam-and-Inoubou division, in the Centre region of Cameroon. It is one of the ten villages that make up the Elip canton, and shares geographical boundaries with the villages of Boalondo, Kilikoto and Omende. Bordered by the Sanaga River, it faces the town of Monatélé in the Lékié division. The Noubomo River, which rises before Bokito, flows through Kananga before emptying into the Sanaga.
Kananga is made up of three large quarters: Bouboukosso at the entrance via Balamba, Mbékéléka in the centre and Tokondo at the exit towards Omende and Yangben.
The habitat is essentially made up of breeze blocks and semi-hard (blocks of earth, dried mud sprayed with cement, etc.) constructions.
The village, which stretches for almost ten kilometres, has a full primary school at its centre. A health centre, now disused and located in the heart of Mbékéléka, completes this system.
As in most rural areas, the main activity here is agriculture. It occupies men and women around cocoa, manioc, groundnuts, yams, plantain and various vegetables. The local seasonal market takes place once a week on Tuesdays in Balamba. The main road to this neighbouring village is the exit road on National Road No. 4, Yaoundé-Bafoussam. In the rainy season, this road is sometimes quite impassable, which, from year to year, is the reason for a sharp increase in transport costs.
With the evolution of activities, fellow herders have settled with their cattle in part of the large savannah of Kananga.
Speaking of the physical environment, this village is an immense expanse of savannah dotted with roast trees and bordered in places by small copses and forests.
Kananga is less than 100 kilometres from Yaoundé.
A little history
At the head of Kananga village is a 3rd degree chieftaincy. His Majesty Kimondio Enoka Cyrille was officially installed on 17 March 2019. He succeeded his father Enoka Gaston, whose predecessors were Olobo Pierre, Bétibiguié, Enoga Behile and Enoga Botomo.
Historically, the Kananga population has a highly warlike past, marked by conflicts with certain neighbouring villages. Alliances that are now centuries old have since brought harmony to the locality.
Speaking of alliances, Kananga is closely linked to the village Nyôlibô in Sanaga-Maritime, where it took refuge during the tribal wars. This alliance, which has lasted over time, is inalienable on both sides.
